I picked up an MP3 player finally. But I'm having some real problems with it. Mainly, when I connect it up, windows goes through the steps of installing the USB Mass Storage driver, then says that the device had problems. Looking in DevMan it says that the USB Mass Storage Device can't start. At first I thought it was my computer, so I tried it on my Sister's machine and got the same thing. I tried it on my old computer and it installs, then locks up as long as the device is connected, when it's disconnected Windows unfreezes. I tried on my dad's win98 machine and same as my old comp. Freezes till it's disconnected. Now here's the bizarre part. I was thinking that it was the cable, so I took the player to work cause we happened to have the exact same cable in stock. I tried it on one of our shop machines with a different cable, and same thing. Then, for the hell of it I tried it with the cable the player shipped with, and it installed fine, and worked perfectly. So basically I've gotten it to work once, on a computer at work, but not on the 4 computers at my house. The only thing that I can think of it being is a power issue, but I'm only using 2-3 USB ports on my main machine, none on my old one. My sister is only using one (and has an Asus mobo, where mine is an MSI). And my dad's machine is using 1. Could it be power supply maybe? I don't think my ports are fucked, cause my digital camera installs fine as a mass storage device, and so does my Card Reader. my 4port USB hub works fine when I connect it, and my mouse, printer, and scanner all work fine off of USB. Any help would be appreciated. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

If it's new, it's probably using USB 2.What about the computers? The one at the office significantly newer or older than the ones at home? Maybe home computers set up to use USB 2 only, while the player is USB 1? -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one

Heh, well, the one at work is older. But I have USB1 and USB2 on this machine. (it's an old enough board that not all ports are USB2). It doesn't seem to matter in any case.My old machine is only USB1, and in fact is older than the machine at work. ( the work machine is an old P4 machine, where as my old one is an older p3 machine) I should note, that connecting it to the USB2 windows sees it as either an unknown device, or gets the same mass storage problem. Well, USB is supposed to be plug and play, especially storage devices. If it doesn't work after plugging it in, I'd take it back to the store. Four computers should really be enough to prove it's unworthiness. -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one

I think I ruled out the power issue. (by the simple expedient of disconnecting (from power) everything not essential to booting. It's WinXP GFK. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

I don't like the idea of iPod shuffle. I like to be able to select my music since I am a control freak about my music.I am leaning towards this one for a cheap mp3 player, it's the same size as an iPod shuffle, has a back-lit screen, and has had pretty good reviews too. Check it out, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=55-125-003&depa=0 AcidWarp, whats the mp3 player you are trying to use? edit, also its the same price! You don't need to use shuffle play. I just want one cause it's cheap. $130cdn for the 512MB one. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

a REALLY cheap Nexxtech one, only 128MB. I really wish it worked, cause it has an analogue lineinput, and it'll encode on the fly.Guess I got what I paid for though. . . -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

Actually, I've discovered the heart of the problem. It's some USB device or another that I have connected (or had connected in the past). It looks like maybe my Fuji Finepix cam or something like that. I'm thinking I'll just wipe and reload, I'm about due for one anyway.-------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.
