ok...i love q3 and i love playing on line but i got some problems trying to install point release 1.31. the problem is that i get an error message "version 4, expected version 3". I tried uninstalling q3, cleaning the ref files, and trashing everything relating to q3 and than installing q3 and 1.31 over again and i get the same error. q3 works fine after i uninstall 1.31. so...why am i having this problem? anyone?

This is just a guess, but perhaps the server you're trying to connect to is running an older version than 1.31

Go to the control panel, and remove everything directly related to Q3A. Then go to your q3a folder and remove it. (You might wish to make a backup of your config files first!)

Then reinstall a fresh and also update to the 1.31 pointrelease.

Might also be good to get The all seeing eye. It is a third party server browser that tells you a lot more about the games in progress than the ingame server browser.

which config files are we talking about? windows or quake? I've erased the whole quake dir and folder from the comp. I've only got q3a does this make a difference? i've done everything execpt reinstall win98 over again and i really dont want to do that just to play quake...but than again...i'm often late to work because i play on line so much.

That would be the quake3 config, /q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg to be more precise. It stores your binds, single player progress etc. Also backup your q3key file.

Just to be on the safe side you could also try to clean your registry from any key related to Quake 3 but you should know what you are working on when you are in this. I would suggest a cool tool to do that wich is really user friendly:

RegCleaner

Do some RTFM to learn how it's working, really easy.
