Originally posted this in Broch's thread, but I figured it's prolly info worthy of everyone's attention. There are free (both is cost, and of adware/spyware/bundled apps) programs out there for playing both Quicktime and Real media content.

I've been using both of these for quite some time, and they both rock. Highly recommended if, like me, you can't stand Real or Quicktime.

There's VLC and Jet Player too.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack including every codec you'll ever need, real alternative, quicktime alternative, and BS-Player (a great media player)

Why bother with Cygwin when there's a perfectly serviceable Windows native build of mplayer.

No GUI tho, which is not so good for Tablet PCs.

I didn't know if it was cygwin or native. I only knew that, somehow, it ran on win32

my tablet PC wouldn't play any DVD movies, because Windows Media Player etc complained that they don't have a codec. Also I couldn't install a DVD Player because I didn't have a DVD drive. couldn't help it no matter what I tried, but mplayer did the trick without any hacks whatsoever
