mmph.

man my framerate sucks on this rig. granted, its a celeron 400 and a tnt2u, but i should be able to muster more than 30fps at 800x600 (that's what i get in demo1. crusher would kill it...it's already bogging in online games).

any ideas on what the problem is?

mexicans, possibly.

but really, this is weird. BOTH my rigs are actually way underperforming. i mean shit, i remember playing at 1024x768 at 50-60fps on my old celeron 300a/tnt2u rig....back in like, 1999.

yet, on a celeron 400(@450mhz) with that same tnt2u, i can only get 30fps in ANY resolution in opengl. just for kicks, i put it in software mode, and ran demo1 at 800x600...FIFTEEN FRAMES PER SECOND.

my other rig is barely doing better that the only celery 300a. i have quake2 at 1280x960, and while it is pretty consistent and never slows down, it's only doing 50fps in demo1. this is with an XP1800 and a GF2MX.

wtf?

For starters, what OS are you using, what other programs are running, do you have the latest drivers, etc?

i've tried it with no programs in background. i get the same framerate with no programs as i do with zonealarm and norton running.

I can only think to check vsync. You might want to try older drivers as well.

SPYWARE!!!

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D and any other removers you can think of.

Heh, that's what I do at work, ALL DAY.

Customer: "My Machine is really slow"

Me:"Okay, we'll check it out"

LAter. . .

Me: "WTF!! No wonder, 600 Spyware objects."

...this is fresh format. the first thing i did was turn off all hazardous shit in IE and install spybot and zonealarm. (i was using mozilla, but it's a fucking pain in the ass with java, flash, and basically any kind of media. until someone can make an IE alternative that actually works, it looks like i have no choice....)

my school PC is clean as well.

Hmmmm. . . .

I use firefox, and have no problems with most plugins, it's just a bitch installing them all over again.

Are the machines overall slugish, or just while playing Q2?

I blame XP. I bet if you threw 98 on the 400 it would run like it used to.

look up tweaking services.msc on the interweb for starters, that'll help with all the shit ms services that are running that you don't need.
Be sure to set your swapfile to a fixed size, turn off system restore and then see what you're getting.

I agree, blame XP in this scenario.

Yeah, not for nothing, but my Q2 doesn't run that great either. However, I've been having sporadic problems and might as well bite the bullet and format.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode? I wonder if that'll make things worse...
