A Winnipegger's death goes unnoticed for two years. Thank his computer.

quote:
ONE NOVEMBER DAY in 2002, Jim Sulkers, a 53-year-old retired municipal worker from Winnipeg, climbed into bed, pulled the covers up, and died. Over the next 20-odd months, the U.S. invaded Iraq, Janet Jackson exposed herself at the Super Bowl, and Canadians -- with some reluctance -- elected Paul Martin. But, tragically, it wasn't until Aug. 25, 2004, toward the end of the Athens Summer Olympics, that somebody finally thought to look in on Jim Sulkers.

My favorite parts of the article:
quote:
"For many practical purposes, this man was virtually alive throughout that time,"

"This man's life was extended for two years by the technology he used..."

"The Internet," said Nie, "could be the ultimate isolating technology that further reduces our participation in communities even more than did automobiles and television before it."

Yeah, they had that running on the news here for a good long while. Odd that the neighbors didn't even notice that he never came out of the apartment.

The Machine Stops was published in 1909?!

It doesn't have to predict it, but influence us to become that way. Have you ever thought of that? We can get lost in sports, playing or watching, books, clouds, nature *cough* religion *cough*. Why is getting lost in technology the only problem we are concerned about? I don't know why we are concerned about a fault that exists in all of us. Suddenly, if someone is in the process of that fault why some guy isn't, he thinks there is a problem. It's more about bad timing than bad behaviour.
