Fett, where are you?
Just when you want to talk to someone, they're nowhere around.

Well, if you ever do read this, Boba, just wanted to tell you that I've taken the jump into the ATI camp. That's right, my first ATI card, a 9600Pro. Not the greatest right now, but the price was right. And you know what?

I like it!!

Just as soon as I jump to ATI cuz it's got the FPS "Crown", nVidia (like I told everybody they would) retorts with the 5900 and blows ATI into the weeds.

But seriously, I've got a 9700 pro All-in-Wonder. I really like the additional features nVidia doesn't offer. Maybe someday I'll use them other than just watching my TV desk top.

What pisses me off about ATI is I bought a TV Tuner from them and after I install it and found this problem where the TV screen is nothing but lines their tech people tell me oh if you don't have an ATI video card there can be issues. Especially if your are running Windows XP with an NVidia card.

They gave me a work-around.

Every time I use it I have to change my display properties from 16 bit to 32 bit or vice versa.

I wish they would have made it clear when you buy it that you need their video card. I would have never bought it then...

I'll never buy ATI...

Always, always be thorough when researching future purchaces. Really a simple google search can do wonders.

Been very pleased with the picture quality and performance of my new Ati9700Pro. When Nvidia has something better to offer at below 100db I'll be glad to try it out.

I always research everything. There was no information at the time I bought it.

I'm sure Cac does a good job researching before buying, he's prolly built a few dozen or more boxes by now

From what I've read on various boards over the years, it's basically a toss of the coin with ATI products in regards to their stability in various setups. Something like which Cac described with that tuner card *should* have a blurb on the retail packaging stating it works best with ATI video cards.

Imagine some HP Pavilion dude going into Best Buy to get a tuner and then having to take it back for the 19 yr old geek to install for him and charge 50 bucks just to say, "Oh, yea Sir, you have to switch your bit color each time you use this, standard stuff, dude sir"

I use a hauppauge(sp) tuner and it works like a charm.

Hey Outttie. Isn't Hauppague kinda like professional stuff?

BTW, I'm off the plasma screen wagon. I think I wanna build a 50" Samsung DLP into my wall. $4K sounds better than $8K, especially after I fond out the kids need another bout with braces.

I had a Happauge WinTv-card a few years back and it worked like a charm...(I expect it still do, but it's sitting in a computer that's fried which I haven't bothered to fix)

Watching a soccermatch on the computer-screen for the first time, was a peculiar feeling...

outrider - Yeah I should have bought Hauppauge but I picked the ATI one up locally at Best Buy because I had a $50.00 gift card there. Is your card digital or just analog?

Jon - I believe Hauppauge makes high end stuff in addition to low-mid range. I've seen their low end analog card for $50.00 which is similar to the ATI card I bought.

Grumps:

If you buy a low end analog card you can get all the basic channels up to 120 or so. In fact I get free HBO on mine which is channel 5 for Comcast.

If you want to get the digital channels you need a digital tuner card or external tuner which cost over $200.00

Either way I don't think you will get porn channels unless you already subscribe to them.

Tip: If/when you move into a new house/apartment and only sign up for high speed internet from a cable provider and don't get cable tv service you can simply split off the cable to your modem and get free basic cable. If you want digital cable then your stuck paying...

Those ATI pricks still don't warn you about running that (I)Wonder(if it will work) TV Tuner card's problem with Nvidia GeForce III card and Windows XP.

From their website as of today:

Q2: With what graphics cards is ATI-TV WONDER family compatible?

A2: ATI-TV WONDER family is compatible with all graphics cards that support overlay. However, due to the number of graphics cards available in the market, ATI cannot test each and every one. Here is the list of manufacturers whose cards are supported:

ATI
3Dfx
S3
NVIDIA

I have something to admit about myself to everyone here.

The last time Fett was in internet wave silence I hunted down him at his parent's house (using a strange type of deduction) and called him. He said he was busy at his job. I felt like a stalker and never hunted down or called any internet person again.

Don't get scared, I PROMISE TO BE GOOD!

Trivia: Who said "I PROMISE TO BE GOOD" in UBB history?

Take care,

Cy

That was a joke Cac.

I called him because everyone was wondering what happened to him just like people did here. I used to take this internet stuff a little too far at times...that's all!
