Whatever Geforce you can afford. I just got the Prophet II MX a few weeks ago and I'n thrilled with it. I think it's about middle of the road when it comes to price. Not sure, I didn't look around much. It was 250.00 Canadian dollars which would be about 50.00 U.S. dollars.
(Actually it would be 163.64 USD at todays rates).

Look into a GeForce 2 MX based card then.
They run about $150 US, and preform a bit better then a GeForce DDR, but have more nifty features or something, with the added bonus of the GeForce2 Transformation and Lighting engine.

TK, you forget that those were the low cost versions of the full Radeon. I read that article too, you know. I'm pretty sure that the full radeon is actually pretty good. In fact beacuse of the way it handles it's pixels, ie: more than 4 per clock, it has the potential to be a really kick ass chip.

hrtg22, I'd go with a geforce2 for the best value right now, if you can afford it.

The Raedon has some good hardware, but I've never seen a company yet, ATI included, match Nvidia in the driver department.

Heh.

It'll probably last until Doom 4 cause it has the shitload of memory that is fast

I recommend getting an Elsa Gladiac... They seem to be the toppest of the top performers in every benchmark I've seen.

Snag definitely makes some good points, besides - silly visual bugs can happen on any platform with any card. TomsHardware is a complete shithole nowadays, and I don't trust a damn thing I read there (actually, I don't even look there anymore).

My sister's boyfriend actually works at ATI. He programs drivers for the Radeon. The chipset has features on it not even in use yet because no software utilizes them. The Radeon is also capable of applying more texture layers per pass (3) than the geforce2 ultra (2). This will make a significant difference in games with a lot of bump mapping, detail textures, and environment maps (cough..new DOOM, CastleWolf).

Don't shrug the Radeon off because it doesn't say "NVidia" on the GPU. And I assure you (my sister's bf tells me) that the driver support is under furious development and will only improve.

and until the time it actually does improve (and it has to do so significantly), I still recommend the Geforce2
