Is it possible? I really only need a video card, cpu and motherboard but I haven't been keeping up on what's good. Is there a modern day equivelent to the 300A@450?

The video card itself will eat that budget. Its rediculous really.

Just so you know, I have a 2.2ghz (XP 3200+) w/512 PC3700 and a Radeon 9800 Pro and I BARELY average 35fps on Low @ 640x480 w/every bell and whistle turned off.

Quake 3 was the same way - no one had very good graphics at the beginning.

Yeah, I have an X800XL and I got that at COST for $300US (at the time, $350CDN).

Because it's the Doom3 engine, a Geforce card is going to handle it better (better at opengl). The 6600GT would be a good choice, and probably runs the game better than a 9800 Pro. I'd dig around for some benchmarks using different mid-range cards and see.

As for what's good mobo/cpu wise. . . it's hard to say. If you're a broad-minded buyer, the Intel 6x series procs overclock like crazy, then again, the AMD64 Venice cores aren't too shabby either. Motherboards for AMD are going to be slightly cheaper. It does depend on how feature rich you want the board to be though.
