Hello, I am a building a system for my friend, It is a nice system to my thinking, based on the Barton. I have everything selected except for the video card.....He says he can spend 150 preferably but can go as high as 200 if there will be a huge difference in performance. Remember I am in Canada. These are the prices from my companies distributor. GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9200 128MB, TV-OUT,VIDEO-IN,DVI PORT $116.00 ATI RADEON 9200 128MB DDR AGP8, TV-OUT, RETAIL PACK $127.50 GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9600,128MB, ,TV-OUT,DVI PORT $133.70 CP ATI RADEON 9600PRO 128MB, DDR, AGP8X, DVI,TV-OUT, RETAIL $197.40 ( should i stay away from power color ASUS V9520 GFX-5200 HOME-THTRE $189.10 I don't know anything about nvidia cards but from what I have been hearing Radeons are the wya to go -------------------- Hot Women Make Men Buy Beer Ugly Women Make Men Drink Beer

I would go with a Radeon 9600 card based on his price expectations. A 9600 will run everything out there quite well, and should last for a while.Personally, I think the PowerCooler brand is quite good. I've owned a couple of them with no issues, so I'm going to recommend the following: PowerCooler 9600 Pro - $132.00 Or, for a little more performance: PowerCooler 9600XT - $163.00 One other option to keep in mind, if the case already has decent airflow, you can go with a fanless Sapphire 9600 Pro to reduce noise: Sapphire fanless 9600 Pro - $168.00

I went to Tom's and thats where I get most of my info except most of the information there no is all about the new cards. I was thinking of the 9600xt however I'm not sure he will go for the price jump cause he is on a limited budget....I will see if he will fork out the dough for a 9600 xt but if that doesn't work the general consensus would be to go with a 9600 pro by power color?Just thought I would give you the prices for the cards still up for negotiations ATI- i've been told to stay with radeons made by ATI but they are quite a bit more money which I assume is due to their clock speeds, memory quality, etc --------------- ATI RADEON 9600XT 128MB DDR, AGP8X DVI TV-OUT RETAIL PACK $262.00 ATI RADEON 9600PRO 128MB DDR, AGP, DVI, TV-OUT, RETAIL PACK $256.00 Gigabyte ---------------- GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9600 PRO, 128MB,TV-OUT,DVI PORT $216.00 GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9600 XT,, 128MB,TV-OUT,DVI PORT $218.00 GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9600,128MB, ,TV-OUT,DVI PORT $133.70 Power color ----------------- CP ATI RADN 9600XT ULTRA 128MB, DDR AGP8X, DVI, TV-OUT, RETA $232.00 CP ATI RADEON 9600PRO 128MB, DDR, AGP8X, DVI,TV-OUT, RETAIL $197.40 CP ATI RADEON 9600PRO 256MB, DDR, DVI,TV-OUT, RETAIL $204.00 I have heard that teh 256 cards are slower because they have lower quality memory or something should i stick to a 128 card even though the price is only a few bucks more for the 256? Asus- thinking this jump in price is out of the question ------------ ASUS RADEON 9600XT 128MB DDR, AGP8X, DVI, VIVO $264.00 [ 03-12-2004: Message edited by: god ] [ 03-12-2004: Message edited by: god ] -------------------- Hot Women Make Men Buy Beer Ugly Women Make Men Drink Beer

I've heard the same thing about 256MB cards as well. You know, I'm sorta thinking maybe you should just present the facts to the person you're building the machine for and let them decide what they want. You're just building it, let them do the thinking. -------------------- “I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” --Dr. Stephen Hawking.

For that price range, Maximum PC magazine (the bible- see "Budget Video Card" ) recommends a card with the nVidia FX5700 Ultra chipsetLink with better price [ 03-13-2004: Message edited by: jondster ] -------------------- No Sig

NVidia. And I'm only half programmer, I'm still mostly an animator, so OpenGL is essential to me. -------------------- quote: Originally posted by FS: Wow, I can't believe I'm agreeing with FS on this one
