why are they graemlins? Why aren't they emoticons anymore? wtf ARE graemlins? And don't say "those little cute cartoony faces"

I was gonna draw a picture in smilies but apparently we're only allowed 8 images per post. phooey.

Is that why? I know other boards can have any number of icons - as long as they're named correctly they are all available.
