I know this isn't "hot off the press" but just what the fuck is going on here?

I'm all for putting bad guys in jail but the video I watched on CNN is pretty disturbing.

I saw that the other day. Kind of disturbing. I have to wonder though, just what exactly happened. That video is only part of what took place.

That part the bugged me the most was that when the civie was trying to protect his face, the second officer restrained him.

I agree, I don't know if we have the full story but I don't think a police officer has the right to kneel on a guy's throat and punch him repeatedly in the face. It's obvious that the guy is not resisting and has no way to defend himself.

I know that in the line of duty police officers take a bunch of crap and some criminals get exactly what is coming to them...maybe this guy did. However, the police are supposed to be different from you and I and are supposed to restrain themselves. Unless they are protecting themselves, which these cops are not, they are no better than the criminals that they are paid to protect the public from.

Well, he was resisting enough that they couldn't get the cuffs on him, but he wasn't being violent. That being said, I don't see how 2 cops couldn't roll him over and get his arms behind his back.

Many, many cops are power-tripping assholes with huge inferiority complexes. That being said; if you are able to yell "I can't breathe," you can breathe. And I couldn't care less if a known gang member takes a few blows to the face.

I agree with your first statement.

I kinda agree with your 2nd statement. I think what he probably meant was that he was having trouble breathing.

Your last statement troubles me though. Why is it OK for police to beat up on known gang members? I'm of the opinion that people should be punished for what they have done, not what you might think they have done. I don't want to come over like I am protecting this one guy, I don't know him. He could be a really bad guy. He may have had a beating coming to him. I'm basing my opinion on the story as it was reported and the accompanying footage.

People like you and I will never be arrested in that way. You don't end up on the ground with a knee on your neck without resisting arrest. As much as I _really_ don't like cops (sorry RoGuEBoB :P), I have to think that this dude was giving them a serious hard time before the camera was turned on (or the footage was favorably edited).

It is sad to say, but I partially agree with RB. This gang member is a known felon, he's running from the cops, so ya know why? He was restrained.

Sure, a knee to the throat isn't pleasant, but the quicker the guy is cuffed, the quicker the knee is removed. If you struggle, it'll only prolong the knee to the throat and obviously warrant "excessive" force. Now should have the cop punched him 6 times? Don't know, but that guy should have not ran in the first place, and he should of stopped struggling when they asked him to.

Its easy to put the blame on the cops when you only see that, but like others of you have said, we did not see how things unfolded from the beginning. We are getting a partial (pun intended) view.

BTW, I hate cops too, but I do respect what they do. And its fully possible to hate and respect someone/something at the sametime.

The editing concerns me also. I don't think we are getting the whole story. I've met some idiot cops in my time but, as you said, I've never been treated in the way that he was. I wonder if there is more footage? Would be interesting to see it all if there is.

I'm not really trying to play devil's advocate, I'm just trying to point out (rather badly) that there are many possible outcomes for that situation; not all of which involve blows to the head and a knee on the throat. Also, I seem to remember; either in the article, or maybe on Youtube (the vid is there), that the clip only covers part of the arrest.
