I am having a big problem with Quake III! I can't play on the internet with the game, I can't search for servers, I can't even connect to a ip that i specify. I am using Earthlink DSL to get me on the internet. It has a Etherent DSL modem that is connected to my hub. I am running Windows XP Pro. I don't understand why quake has such a problem because I get onto the interent and play with Unreal Tournament. If I use a dial-up connection, it still does not work. I am very very frustrated! What do I do?

Are you running some sort of firewall by any chance? If the firewall is not correctly setup it will not allow you to play quake.

I am running XP which has a built-in firewall but when I was running 2000(which has no firewall), I still could not play.

My DSL is connected to my Lan hub. My Lan Hub is connected to my Lan adapter. I have a specified IP address. I have the connection setting in Quake set to Cable,DSL,Lan. Can you guys tell me your setup and what you did if you are running 2000/XP with a broadband connection. Also, I have to Log in to use the internet (enter in my user name and password)

I've had no problems playing online no matter what OS I used. Right now I'm using XP Pro and it works just fine. Cable connection. Using the XP firewall. If you use Zone Alarm make sure you have allowed Q3 to access the net or turn it off before playing. Other than that I dunno. Might be an issue to discuss with your isp.

Might be that there is a firewall that your ISP is running, especially if you have a static ip. Try contacting your ISP and asking them is that is the case.

I'm also on ADSL, dynamic ip and the ISP is running and firewall. It does not keep me from playing online, but I cannot for example accept incoming file transfers via ICQ also I cannot host games since I never see my own ip.
