Well, when I found this place I was 15 or so and was way into Quake2. I had just finished up high school early and was taking classes at the local community college while working at an elementary school a few days a week doing IT. I think I was rocking a P233 with a Voodoo2 card at the time and was looking at upgrading to a PII 450 which was top of the line. I learned about the new Celeron "A" processors with on die cache here that could be overclocked.

I originally spec'd out a 300A and an Abit BH6 as people here recommended but by the time I could actually afford it, I ended up getting a 366A on a BE6 which I got running stable at 533. When Windows 2000 came out, I upgraded to a BP6 dual socket 370 motherboard and added another 366A.

These days, I'm actually back to working IT for a school district after bouncing around a bit. I graduated with a degree in Business, got married in 2010, and bought a house recently that my wife and I love.

What are your early memories of this place? What was your life like then? What are you up to now?

--------------------

I am.

Sure. Why the hell not. I was 24 and had just put together my first Pentium system (PII 300 w/ Voodoo2). I got into Quake 2 in early '99 and had some technical questions about it which I took to the Q2 board. I hung out and asked questions and went a few rounds with Horka Thane who I thought was hilarious. People were hating on Star6, and other interesting dramas were playing out. I think I had gotten there right after the main forum went private, so I was invited in by 40 after a while.

I think it was around mid-99 I was invited to The Lounge here and to Force3D. I hung out mostly at F3D and visited here every once in a while. Eventually F3D went away, so there was sort of an exodus to Q3A and so I followed everyone here. My account had been deleted for some reason, so GFK had to remake it. I hung around for 4 years or so, but things sort of slowed down and I moved on to AFK pursuits.

The last decade has been interesting. I lost a best friend. My mother who I was close to passed away. I lost a lot of weight, made a lot of money, learned Portuguese, lived in Brazil for a time, married and divorced a Brazilian, lost a lot of money, and gained the weight back. It's truly been an adventure, and I'm better for it.

So it was 96 (i was 16) and I was heavy in to the Quake scene. Was one of the original OPs in the UnderNet IRC channel #quake2 (my original memory of hash tags before we knew what hash tags were). Met some awesome people in that channel (a lot from the original #quake channel naturally made the change, including Disruptor who ended up getting a job with id designing maps from making contacts in those same channels). I was dabbling around with websites at the time, and got involved with quake2.com. The previous forum system that was used was utter crap, so I volunteered to revamp it, and like to think I helped make this home for so many wonderful people that I have so many fond memories with:

The Railguns wars, Horka Thane, the Q2 wedding, the Lounge private society (that I opened up to the public, and i still regret to this day), the forum split (the reason for my regret), the F3D mass exodus. So many great convos, that still continue from time to time. Love that this place is still here without have to go to an Internet archive.

So for the past 10 years (my history here is coming up to 20.... Wow...) I've graduated from St. John's with a BS in Computer Science. I've worked in IT ever since and still love it. Couple of rough patches with some dumb decisions I've made, too many drugs done, but I've learned and grown stronger from those days in my 20s. I'm now 31, just got married on 4/20/13 (go figure right) to the love of my life, my best friend. Getting ready to move on to the next major steps of my life becoming a home owner, and *gulp* starting a family. Nervous, excited, and ready for it. Love you all.

PS: J0SH this was a great idea. I hope more see it.

This site says that I registered in late '99, but I had been watching Quake2.com long before that learning how to find servers to play DM/CTF. I remember how awful it was to sit there and refresh the in-game server list, and I ended up finding out about GameSpy 3D on Quake2.com somehow. I transitioned to here over Q3A. I was 15 when I started posting here, which explains a lot of my stupidity back then.

I ended up going to huge party school, snagged my bachelors degree in six years of being totally undecided, almost got engaged, and decided I still had no idea what I wanted to do. I took the drive and joined the military, learned a foreign language, and now I live in Hawaii. I'm still no where near where I want to be in life as I approach 29, but things aren't so bad either. I've got to live in some great places and make even better friends.

I've almost totally given up gaming. The last rig I built got destroyed by UPS in the mail to California. I bought a VAIO laptop shorty after, it started going out, and I just went full into no gaming mode and bought a MacBook Pro (and I love it).

I remember when this was private (I somehow made the cut), the F3D creation and implosion, the Railgun situation, romps on OICU812's server (correct?), and many other memorable times this site gave me in my adolescence.

Glad the site is still around and people are doing generally well for themselves. Congrats on getting married GFK.

Thanks Acid. Wasn't so sure I should mention that part with the track record of marriage with the members on here lol.

Oh and FYI, if any old members see this and want to post but can't remember their password or no longer have the registered email address, just let me know and I'll help (I have access to the CP again). Reach me at cdegaeta[at]gmail-com

I remember joining Quake2.com's forum early in 1998; I had lurked for a month or two before then. I was 17. At that point in time, the board was more functional than social. That is, Drako's Tech Support forum was by far the most active place. But that would soon change as id released the 3.14 point release and deathmatch really took off.

The first computer I played Quake2 on was a P166 with a S3 ViRGE 1MB card. It couldn't really do OpenGL correctly or quickly, so I played in software mode (over dialup). Before I went away to college, I built a P2-300 based system with 64MB of RAM and a 4MB Rendition Verite GPU. When I got to campus, plugged into that ethernet and saw active Quake2 servers right on the school LAN, I knew that I was in trouble. During my freshman year, my roomate (RoGuEJeFe) and I pulled at least one all-nigher per week on the Trinity Vanilla CTF and Yoda's Barn DM servers. We started a Quake clan, and launched QMass.net -- a Pentium 100 running on a cardboard box out of our dorm room.

Even tho id's games caused me to miss class regularly, I honestly owe my livelihood to them. Without my addiction to DOOM and Quake, I never would have gotten into computers in the mid 90's, and I wouldn't have chosen Computer Science as my major. Needing to know how the guts of Quake worked is what drove me to spend endless hours mapping and modding throughout college. Quake is where I cut my teeth as a software engineer. And so here I am, 15 years after Q2's release, hacking on http://github.com/jdolan/quake2world at least a few hours every week -- still

Since 2003 or so, I've moved around, first to Boston and then to Naples, Florida. I was in one very negative relationship for about 6 years, but finally grew a pair and got out of it. Within a month, I met the right girl and fell in love. We moved in together after 3 months, got engaged after a year, and were married this past December -- not 18 months since our first date.

Life is good.

I wish Fuse, Jondster, OICU812, Lord Vader, Raver, Max Max, Jarlaxle, HAMMER, 40, Serengeti and The Stranger would check in once in a while. But I'm very glad to have all of you here, too. I'd be surprised if there's a longer-standing video game community in the world.

Sure thing. I hope to be in your position sometime in the near future. You'll break tradition, or someone else already has and just doesn't post anymore!

Edit - Congrats to you too, RogueBitch.

I started posting here originally as Dickweed, which was my pre-Cacophonous Quake II name. Even for single play mode I played as Dickweed which seemed to really piss off the Stroggs.

I guess I came here by yahooing something about overclocking a Celeron 300A, and Drako or someone helped me quite a bit. I found it an interesting place and of course stayed ever since. I was working in quality assurance for an automotive supplier at the time and just starting to support their IT needs on the side.

Wintermute talked about Star6, which I introduced as fun character whose first post was asking if anyone wanted to play ring toss by ‘tossing’ donuts onto a dick. It may sound weird to some of you but that is how they eat their flat Polar bread, in Sweden. The women there toss it onto the men’s schlongs then eat it off it. Notch knows this! Speaking of Notch, he was always way up on my list of my favorites here, (really all of the Swedes are) and I do miss him. I try to follow him on Twitter (@Notch) but honestly I don’t understand half of what he is talking about there. J/K - I hope he still ‘gets my sense of humor’. I know Raver would have…

Wintermute, if you think people were hating on Star6, you should search some of my Johnathan Harris threads. That guy really knew how to irk people. I should totally bring him back to liven this place up.

At some point I changed my name to Cacophonous which is me, btw. I am Cacophonous! Everything I posted as Cacophonous was absolutely true.

Of course when I wanted to be silly I have created alternate users: Star6, Johnathan Harris, Burble, Acid, Cyborg6, Tea Bagger, etc. I created Burble and Acid because of my masochistic side.

I guess most of my life I have had nicknames from growing up as a teen (Rouge), in high school, (Pussy Breath) even as an adult, (Studly or Hey Stud).

My fondest memories here are just great posts with the ‘cool people’ that posted/post here. I love interacting with so many of you. Too many cool people to list!

I work for a very cool company as an IT systems administrator. We are a global corporation that dominates our market, and do very advanced engineering/manufacturing of some very cool and interesting products.

I still play guitar but these days, my band consists of my five year old son, Marcus, on drums and myself on vocal/guitar. We recently recorded a song called “Trollhättan”, which is about an outcast troll (laid off Saab employee) living under a bridge and how a little boy was not afraid to embrace him, just because he had green skin and orange hair.

RoGuEBiTcH, you and your wife make a nice couple.

Like Teaphonous I came here somewhere between the synapse thread and the 300a craze.

I enjoyed the friendly banter and camaraderie of the forums and the in-game experience for several years. I learned to kill by watching your moves, RoGuEBiTcH, with the railgun and that snappy lithium hook agility. Oicu812 taught me as well, and that Hammer guy really explained the rocket launcher logic in detail. There were many fine killers on these forums and I learned from all of them. We...I...felt like family.

I became obsessed with fragging. Spent lots of money on cpu & video upgrades.

Around 2005 I accidentally fragged a midget during a confrontation in the parking lot of The Silver Bullet bar near the Portsmouth shipyards. To this day I still believe he was camping there and my lawyer tried to make the case, but the jury would hear none of it.

I posted here periodically over the years when I had access. I think the prison library still used celeron 300a's right up until I was released on good behavior last month.

I'm reformed now. I give free AR15 safety lessons to senior citizens in the parking lot outside the K&W Cafeteria every Wednesday night at 6 because that is chicken and dumpling night and the turn out is big.

I still do not believe video games lead to video violence, but that motherfucking midget had it coming.

We should maybe get together and have a bbq or something.

My home life has changed quite a bit recently. I am divorced and Marcus lives with me about 90% of the time. He and I are both happy with the situation.

I'm now in a relationship with the most incredible, beautiful and sexiest woman in the world. She is truly my soul-mate, and we should have been together a long time ago.

I honestly have never been this happy before.

We should maybe get together and have a bbq or something.

There is no way you were all of those people. I know that by saying so, you're trying to perpetuate the confusion caused by your actual aliases.. But there's no way you were BurbleX, Acid or Cyborg.

Side note: Cyborg is literally the only person from this forum I've never missed.

Edit: Btw, your antics have never bothered me at all, Cac. I've always thought everything you post, no matter which account it came from, was funny and genuine in its own way.

Addressing the other replies separately as they warrant it:

outie, I have great memories of Bungee Rail Lithium with you. The rest of your post is so tongue-in-cheek, I'm not sure what I can respond to without being had. lol. Suffice to say, I'm glad you're a free man.

Cac. Oh I remember Jonathan Harris pretty well although I'm still unconvinced that it's you for sure. I had this theory that JH was both your pen name and fictional character who wrote both about his own adventures and fantasy fiction Vague Value which you actually wrote. If you are/were JH, does that mean you are 'Zobrioth'? If so, it's a clever idea to have created a character for your pen name who also has his own pen name for the book that he/you wrote. I wonder if that's been done before. Am I anywhere in the ballpark? Also, did JH ever get Vague Value published and move on to Blood Brothers? Did he ever get his $2900 back from the shady All Ivy Editing Services? I wonder what became of him.

I found this place within a few weeks of Roguebitch, and we're about the same age. I was always here for the frags and the chatting. I think my first Q2 rig was an amd k6 with an stb velocity 128 card. i still have that video card somewhere. the cpu was turned into a router after I got my 300A and my parents got a cable internet line. The were no $50 NAT boxes at the time. It went on to run 24/7 for about 2 years and then died about 3 months after I added a peltier cooler. By then, my 300A was obsolete for games (I think I had an athlon 1ghz by then) so I set up the 300A as a new router with a first gen tnt card where it served faithfully until 2005 or 6 as my webserver, NAT, UT server, ftp, etc. until it was eventually replaced by a wrt54. I should see if it would still boot. I'm sure I have some pics from my old epson 1.2 megapixel camera on its drive.

Anyway I eventually finished up in community college, went to a university, got a degree in chemistry (physics minor, too) and have since had a career making various adhesives.

I met smohq in person around y2k, along with his old friend lizardboy, and they took me to see my first band in a bar. It was the Uninvited at 14 below in Santa Monica. The bar is the one used in the Tenacious D HBO special, and the band was on their final socal gig in a farewell tour after getting shafted by a shyster label. I also met a whole cadre of interesting characters that I still see around rather frequently, mostly somehow attached to the social circle around the band Head Cheese. Some of them are among my closest friends these days.

As for where I am now, still single, mostly tormented by the notion of establishing and maintaining interest from the opposite sex (even though I feel like a black guy trying to watch an Al Jolson movie when it's on, a fair comparison would be that I am basically an amalgamation of the leading males in Big Bang Theory) and I've been seriously considering moving away from California in the next month or two for the last 2 1/2 years.

I'm 27 now. I guess that would mean I was like 12 when I was playing Quake, at most 13 when I put a 300a machine together.

I believe this forum was pretty much dead before I graduated high school.

...so: I graduated high school. Went to BCT at Fort Knox for ARNG. Was cavalry with 278th ACR. Unit was deployed shortly after the invasion of Iraq while I was training. Unit was deployed again around when I got out due to medical issues. I did not get deployed. I am slightly regretful that no one has died at my hands. Who knows, it may have evened me out a bit...

Went to college at Tennessee Tech (shithole) for two semesters and dropped out, also. Engineering major. Engineering sucks dick. Have since realized I am far too good at devising, fabricating, modifying, and repairing things to be an engineer. Went to an automotive school when I was 20 (another mistake/wasted money). Had my ASE master cert before I got out of there.

Worked for a few different shops. Got to witness wages for mechanics shrink to maybe McDonalds assistant-manager level, with associated drops in competence. After some years getting fucked in my ass, started working for myself.

I don't have a bunch of photos, so here's the one that's on Bookface (I held out until like a month ago; goddamn Mark Zuckerjew). This was...March, maybe?

If anybody's ever around Nashville, drop me a line, honkeys.

@Willy Why leave Cali? I mean, I definitely would in a heartbeat were I living there, but why would you? And BTW, Leonard has a hot girlfriend, so maybe Leonard does not factor into the amalgamation you spoke of. WTH dude... You should have babes on you. I know how smart you are... Why the insecurity? You need to get over yourself b/c there is no good reason why you shouldn't easily be able to get what you want in this matter.

Great thread.

Well, let's see. Where to begin?

After that whole fiasco with B... (She ended up with my brother, they're married now.)

Well, as some of you know, I had a divorce back in late '99. Then the deal with B.

So I decided "to hell with it" and started focusing on my career. I was an automation programmer for a credit card company. Then I took an automation engineer job with the parent bank and got promoted to VP (not as big a deal in the banking biz as elsewhere)

Once they merged with another "too big too fail", there was some fallout, and I decided to search around. I became a consultant, worked on projects that were pretty big (including a large conversion that I ran for the IRS).

Nowadays, I work from home for a major company, which is an outsource provider dealing with administration and programming for other big companies. Networks, Unix, Linux, Windows, Tandem, Mainframe, etc. I do a lot of it.

Meanwhile, I found the love of my life. She's a perfect match for me, same sense of humor (sophomoric), and we get along well. Which is good, considering I work from home and we spend 24x7 together.

Over the last 10 years we have ended up moving 11 times, once to Indiana, twice to Ohio, once to Texas, once to West Virginia, once to Virginia, and several times within Florida. The bank moved me around a bit, and then a couple of career changes.

So Rogue, you still in Naples? Because I am in Bradenton now, just north of Sarasota. Maybe we can have that barbeque. I too owe my computer career to an addiction with Doom, Doom2, Quake, etc.

Lately I've found that I have been missing you all. This was a very special place for me.

Rogue, you and the Mrs. look as cute as a bucket of puppies. Congratulations and I am glad that you are both very happy.

Congrats to you as well, GFK. It's the greatest feeling in the world to be married to your best friend.

Acid, I remember you kicking the crap out of me on my own server, even when I had a 30ms ping, you were near 500ms. I wish I still had that old 300a system. Good times.

Outrider, sorry to hear about your legal issues. A midget corpse should not have been that hard to hide permanently, though.

Cac, I always knew you were 65-70% of the people posting here. I thought it was fun pandering to your split personalities.

WillyT, you should get out of California, at least for a while. Check out the country, find out what you like...

Burble, thanks for serving, even if you didn't get to go to hells' outhouse. It's probably better that way.

Winter, I'm glad to see that you are doing better, after a time of hardship. I know how that feels, my friend.

Josh, what do you do for the school district?

I think it's great how many people from this board ended up in IT jobs.

quote:

I wish Fuse, Jondster, OICU812, Lord Vader, Raver, Max Max, Jarlaxle, HAMMER, 40, Serengeti and The Stranger would check in once in a while. But I'm very glad to have all of you here, too. I'd be surprised if there's a longer-standing video game community in the world.

I agree with this, and will definitely be by more often. My days of refreshing the Lounge page every 60 seconds looking for new posts are long gone, but I would like to start checking in daily, if I can.

I've started a new hobby, pinball machines and arcade games. Trying to recapture my misspent youth, I guess. Maybe at 48 it is time.

As far as systems go, I bought an Asus Republic of Gamers i7. 8GB of RAM, 8 CPU cores, GTX460 with 1.5GB. And a nice 256GB SSD to boot from. This thing smokes.

I did get to meet Jondster and his wife once when he came to Tampa. Great guy, and I still have his email. I will send him a link to this thread.

Thanks to everyone who still shows up here. It is a testament to the strength of this community that people still remember q3arena and the folks here with fondness (well, for most of 'em)

Does anyone remember who we actually married in Q2? I remember Hammer running around like a nervous bridesmaid, trying to orchestrate the chaos.

I WILL NOT go to my high school reunion (I didn't like those assholes back then, what would change?) but I'll gladly come back here for a visit.

Thanx to OICU812 for shooting me the link. I had to have my PW sent.

As I told Ron - I AM NOT dead yet. But if I knew I was gonna live this long, I sure would taken better care ... whatever, screw it. It is what it is. Gonna have a hip replaced in 3 weeks. I'm on disability owing to degenerative disk disease. Past that, I'm gray, long-in-the-tooth .... and STILL gaming. Some clowns never grow up. I'm doing BF3 and in a competitive clan. I suck, but I'm the "elder statesman" of the group and last to be picked when setting up scrims.

I also got out of sales/sales mgt. and currently work out of my home for a IT managed service provider as a tech and tier 2 support.

I think Ron was mistaken in that when Denni & I met him down in Tampa, we weren't married as yet. We got married poolside (at our house) and are still happily hitched in spite of kids moving back in, my "afflictions" and life's other bullshit.

I'll post more later, but I gotta go fix some cretin's email account ... he thinks he needs it for some reason. (Do your comm via Wastebook like all the rest of the mouth-breathers, DOLT !!!)

This site says that I registered in late '99, but I had been watching Quake2.com long before that

Didn't GF overhaul this place in June of '99, requiring everyone to re-register ? (hence that date on everyone) I think I got involved here in like '97 or so. Wasn't it because of the little douche bag "Railgun" or something like that ?

I remember - if OICU had the money for plane fare, he woulda flown to wherever that kid was, and personally killed the little prick.

Hey. The nerve of some people.

I must be doing my job too well. Nobody's broken anything in the last 2 hours.

That's a misconception. The shit always hits the fan at 4:45 PM

Holy shit. Well this is a pleasant surprise! Welcome back, O and Jondster. Yes, Ron, I'm residing in Naples for the foreseeable future. I haven't made it up to Sarasota in a while, but yea, it's only 2 hours away. If any of you guys wanna find me on FB, I'm jay.t.dolan.

Hey Rogue. Yeah, what a revelation. The group I play with causes memories from back in that day. They're not nearly as "social" as we were.

I'm on FB as ... wait for it ...."Jondster1", although I seldom post anything. Use it mainly to see what kind of perversion my sons are into. I've block, hidden and unfriended more boring, insipid people than I've kept.

Exactly this. The original BB was too easy to exploit and for users to post as other users (and anonymously).

I have a server here that's doing nothing but taking my back-ups and streaming video to the house's TVs.

Do you have any idea how shitty Q2 looks on a modern display ? The native resolution is awful low. I ran it at 1920x1080 on my 26" and I could count the pixels. Shoulda tried a framerate for shitz & giggles.

You prolly got more bandwidth up than I do

If anything we should see if there's any active projects out there that has done anything with the Q2 source code that improved net and graphic performance.

I located my CD with the old folder, loaded her up and ... DERP ... Yeah, it helps to turn up the resolution to max. Not bad. Not quite Battlefield 3/Frostbite 2 standards, but I'll bet I can turn a few hundred FPS on a demomap FPS test (assuming I can remember the commands).

At any rate, whatever. Let me know what's on your collective minds.

Not to be blasphemous, but is Quake Live still around? It's not q2dm1, but it's fun and a decent analog. There's 'real' Q3, as well, but I figure it's not worth setting up a server for.

I tried Quake4- that MP was actually a lot more like Q2, FWIW.

I feel slightly giddy at the thought of playing quake with all you old crotchety bastards. Trying to change my life a lot right now, but it doesn't all have to be new shit...change back to fuckin' instagib at O's.

My career path is uncertain, and I've been getting sober for a while. I really did age too fucking quickly. But goddammit, thinking about playing Quake makes me happy. This is the first group I was ever really a part of. I mean that as simply as it sounds. It's an important thing.
