Trying to jump on the linux bandwagon. Anyone know of any good places to get started? I'm looking to do DNS and email servers.

. I know I'll probably get jumped on, but if you're just starting out and want a good distrib plus want to check out a bunch of stuff easily, I recommend you download and install Mandrake 10.1 to play with.

I've run almost all of them and I keep playing with mandrake. I happen to like it. Even more now that they have gotten rid of the cutesy penguins.

Just install everything initially and you'll have several windows managers, sever offices suites, media players, etc.

Mandrake will install the kitchen sink if you let it.

Good for noobs as you'll discover the joys of compiling, installing and running soon enough

best of luck. Have fun.

oh and I think it's called Tripwire. Be sure and install that or something similar if you're playing with email servers.

Otherwise some guy in China will make use of your facilities when you're not looking

If you like RH, I'd try one of the more recent Fedora releases (FC3 is the latest). Sendmail is the standard MTA, but many prefer postfix these days. I've never run a DNS server, but bind is the piece of software you're looking for. An alternative, for simple Linux LANs, is NIS via ypbind - you can basically push passwd/groups/hosts files to all machines on your network.

got the mail server up and running - ended up using CentOS for that one though.
