A WIN2K DHCP configured server with cheap firewall software (like Zonealarm - www.zonelabs.com) or a Liksys External Router Firewall with NAT support?

Cy, are you on crack or something. . . I can't believe you even thought about it.

j/k dude, I'm struggled with that question myself a while back.

Heh...I guess I KNOW that the best solution is the external unit. I just wanted to frick around and build a server. I think I will do both!

I have said it many times before...

Anything that software can do, hardware can do better

This also proves true with a router. BSD, Linux, and all these other DHCP server can do well sure....but if security is an absolute must and you don't wanna take any chances, hardware is the way to go. PERIOD.

not really so all of the time. if someone finds a way in through a hardware door, it can be much harder to counter than with a software protection scheme.

bsd and linux can be locked down just as hard, btw. what do you think that router is running? firmware based directly on what unix machines do for port blocking and packet forwarding. its essentially the same implementation when you get down to it - but infinitely more flexible under an OS like BSD.

RB~ I picked up a pretty cool SUN Ultra 5 box from work. I can toss any 64 Bit OS on it I want. I have SUN Solaris 8 but might consider Linux if it is not a heavy learning curve to get it operational.

I agree that hardware is more secure and geeks like RoGuEBiTcH just like flaunting their superior UNIX skillZ. Ain't nothing wrong with doing this the hard way cuz you learn a lot along the way.

granted, harware holes are much harder to correct. but for the most part, it is harder to screw up. remember, security holes are not usually the fault of the programmer...but usually misconfiguration. granted, people can hammer they way through even the most secure system, but hardware leaves less chance to phuck something up. give a newbie a linux box and give another newbie a standalone router (such as the linksys) and see which one is the most insecure. btw, i of course refer to dhcp as well...since a newbie would be clueless in setting up DNS tables too...

besides, it is more environmentally friendly to use a router rather than a linux/solaris/unix/bsd firewall

wtf, what is this bullshit about a 9 minute penalty and a game misconduct against Doug Weight...god damn Brian Marchment...stupid San Jose Sharks...GRRRRRRR

Cheer for my Oilers with me Gummers
